In Salvador's central colonial district, Pelourinho, Tuesdays are considered the dia da bencao or blessed day of the week. Every Tuesday evening, Soteropolitanos, as the city's residents are called (we've yet to hear the origins of that name), flock to Pelourinho to dance, listen to live music, and enjoy the company of their fellow Bahians. The tradition stems from the weekly religious service, known as Tuesday's Blessing, held at Igreja Sao Francisco in the heart of the colonial city.
