American school buses ("chicken buses," as they are called by English-speaking travelers), are the preferred travel method for Guatemala's many poor vendors and day laborers. These workers are predominantly indigenous and have maintained their diverse customs and language to a great degree, making a bus ride a fascinating look into how Guatemala's indigenous people have staved off cultural invasion for so many years, while in Mexico native traditions were largely lost.
