Panajachel and Lago Atitlan

The lake itself was formed through volcanic activity. Lago Atitlan is a caldera -- roughly speaking, an enormous volcano that erupted and collapsed in on itself, in this particular case 84,000 years ago. It is the deepest lake in Central America at an estimated 340 meters at its darkest depths.
