Colonia del Sacremento, or Colonia, as everyone calls it, was initially a Portuguese outpost, mainly designed to smuggle goods to (Spanish) Buenos Aires. It switched hands between the two Iberian countries a number of times before finally falling under Spain's domain, before Uruguay itself became independent.
