Toward the end of our conversation, Bill speaks openly about the widely popular film "City of God," which chronicles the lives of a group of young men growing up in City of God during the 1960s and '70s. Originally, Bill was offered the role of Knock-Out Ned (played by Seu Jorge in the film) but declined after reading the script. "Drug dealers beating neighborhood residents, traffickers of rival factions chasing after each other's girlfriends, this is not the true story of the neighborhood," he said.
When director Fernando Mierelles could not garner the support of the local neighborhood power brokers who disliked the script's depiction of the area, filming was forced to move to another neighborhood similar to City of God called Cidade Alta (Tall City). "There were serious consequences after the film gained widespread popularity. The self-esteem of local residents was very low. We saw an increase in police presence and a rise in unemployment that resulted from the film's proliferation of negative stereotypes about the area and its people," he said.
