Stalls selling religious supplies are found throughout São Joaquim. This particular stall specialized in beaded necklaces. The varying colors of the necklaces correspond with specific "orixás," the gods and goddesses of the Afro-Brazilian religion "Candomblé." Rooted in West-African traditions, "Candomblé" was brought to Brazil by slaves and is still widely practiced in Salvador, Brazil's epicenter of Afro-Brazilian culture.
