Copacabana Beach is a huge half moon spanning 3 miles of wide, sandy beach. It plays host to Rio's spectacular New Year's Eve celebrations that feature thousands of fireworks fired from barges off shore. During the daytime, the beach is dominated by a mix of tourists and prostitutes but in the early evening locals come out to watch their children play in weekly youth soccer and volleyball games.
