The statue is always mobbed by tourists, as it is a must see for anyone visiting Rio de Janeiro. The statue was named one of the "New Seven Wonders of the World" in 2007 after a worldwide call-in voting contest. The government started a campaign to encourage voting by Brazilians, and telecommunications companies even stopped charging for voters to make calls to vote for the Christ statue.
