London, in our humble opinion, masterfully combines the old and the new. The 30 St. Mary Axe building (lovingly called the Gherkin, or the British word for eggplant), finished in 2004, rises from the city's financial district. It towers ironically over the Tower of London, which in one form or another has been sitting in that spot since 1078.
