In late February, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan brokered a power-sharing deal between rival candidates Raila Odinga (Orange Democratic Movement) and incumbent President Mwai Kibaki (People's National Unity Party), bringing an end to the widespread violence. When the dust settled, more than 1,000 Kenyans had lost their lives and hundreds of thousands more had been displaced from their homes. By the time we arrived, the two parties were in the midst of trying split the seats in an vastly expanded 40-member Cabinet, but had yet to name the ministers or settle on the specifics of the division of ministries.
