Because of its unique shape, the giraffe's circulation system is highly evolved to suit the animal. The heart itself can weigh up to 10 pounds and be as big as 2 feet long to pump blood up its long neck. The neck itself contains a spongy network of vessels to prevent blood from rushing to the giraffe's head when it crouches to drink or eat like the one on the left.
