Part way through, the bus driver slammed on the brakes, only to cautiously drive again. A herd of elephants grazed roadside! While making fruitless attempts to grab our cameras out in time, we couldn't help but notice the scene in the bus: Our fellow Kenyan bus mates were just as excited as we were at this sighting. After a day in Nairobi National Park our friend Benard Langat told us how lucky he felt to be there; despite living in Kenya all his life, he had never seen a giraffe in the flesh. Much of Kenya's wildlife is now contained inside park boundaries. That's when it hit us - what began as a mundane bus ride on the world's shoddiest road had just become a safari for all passengers.
