Along with bicycles, Amsterdam's numerous canals are central to the city's identity. The completed vision of 17th century urban planning, Amsterdam's canals run in semi-circles to the South, out from the city center with their ends leading to the IJ bay North of the city. Originally, the canals made way for an increase in transportation of goods to key points within the city, however, today they are renowned more for their beauty than functionality.
