This picture says it all. When was the last time you saw a traffic light specifically for bicycles? Bikes are the most common form of transport in Amsterdam and the local government has discouraged driving cars in the city center by imposing steep parking fees. The mass numbers of bicycles, pedestrians, cars, and trams requires some order to avoid frequent accidents and, for the most part, city residents abide by traffic signals and cross only at cross walks.
