The Dom, which literally translates to cathedral in German, was the name of Hamburg's central church which was demolished in 1804. Beginning in the 14th century, a tri-annual trade market took place next to the Dom church. Eventually the market assumed the name the Dom. Since then, the Dom has evolved into a full blown fair featuring amusement rides, fun houses, and traditional German food. The month-long Dom is now held three times per year at Heiligengeistfeld field in the St. Pauli district of Hamburg.
