A huge, spiral staircase winds its way to the top, inner ring of the dome, where visitors can get a bird's-eye view of the basilica floor below. Warning: This staircase is not for the faint of heart. We counted 611 stairs to the very top, and along the way we passed several tourists who had stopped, short of breath as they scaled the dome.
