The basilica, built over a period of 120 years between 1506 and 1626, houses the tomb of Saint Peter, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus, and can hold up to 60,000 visitors under its massive dome. In 1656, Italian sculptor and architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini began to redesign St. Peter's Square, the open plaza that lies in front of the entrance to the basilica.
