Bernini was under orders from Pope Alexander VII to create a space large enough so that vast numbers of faithful could view the pope giving his blessing from the window of the basilica. Sadly, we had the misfortune of visiting the holy site on a weekend and ended up waiting in an immense line, seemingly 60,000 strong, to get inside for a look.
