Originally, the design for the basilica's dome was modeled after the dome of another of Rome's architectural gems, the Pantheon. Reaching a height of 448 feet, it is the tallest dome in the world. Until recently, the Vatican had left mirrors underneath, facing the dome, for visitors to easily view its intricate artwork without straining their necks, but sadly these have since been removed.
