In the eighth century, Saint Bede said of the Colosseum, a symbol of Rome with 800 years behind it, that "as long as the Colossus stands, so shall Rome; when the Colossus falls, Rome shall fall; when Rome falls, so falls the world." Fortunately for us, preservation of the site makes it likely that it will stand for quite some time.
