04/23/2008 | Location: Reggio Emilia, Italy
Reggio Emilia is by no means a tourist destination, which was a relief to us after braving the crush of vacationers in Rome. The city's biggest claim to fame is that it is the birthplace of the Italian flag or "Il Tricolore," which was first sewn here on Jan. 7, 1797. Upon entering Reggio's central commercial district it becomes clear that the city is indeed proud of this piece of history, as flags hang above city streets as far as the eye can see.
