Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) was the only bridge left intact after the Nazi retreat during World War II (allegedly an order from Hitler himself). It retains the shops on the bridge that were originally owned by butchers and are now jewelry and souvenir shops. Ponte Vecchio spans the Arno's narrowest point, which is believed to be in the spot where the Romans built the original bridge crossing the river.
