Remnants from the brutal war still haunt downtown Sarajevo, though reconstruction efforts are slowly restoring the city to its old glory as evidenced by the dozens of cranes that tower over the city skyline. In total, it is estimated that 12,000 people were killed during the fighting, 85 percent of them civilians.
