Sunday's elections were viewed by our hosts as an important crossroads for the future of their country. Supporters of Serbian President Boris Tadic have pushed for Serbia's inclusion in the European Union, while the conservative Democratic Party of Serbia has opposed joining the EU, as it aims to forge stronger ties with Russia. Representatives of the Russian government spoke passionately to the crowd during the afternoon rally as supporters waved banners featuring the face of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
