The National Covenant dictates that the president will always be a Maronite Christian, a Sunni Muslim as the prime minister, a Greek Orthodox as the deputy prime minister, speaker of Parliament as a Shi'ite, and the chief of staff of the armed forces a Druze (a distant sect of Islam).
