Quneitra is within the UN-controlled zone at the Israeli border. UN peacekeeping troops are stationed here to prevent further escalation in Syria and Israel's dispute over the Golan Heights. As we entered UN territory, our passports were checked and a Syrian guard jumped in our van to accompany us on our visit to the border with Israel, a requirement for visitors. Special permission to visit the area is required, easily obtained from the Syrian State office in Damascus.
