Saying goodbye to Syria, we headed for the airport to catch our flight to Sri Lanka. This monument to former president Assad, the last of dozens that we saw across the country during our visit, is a sticking memory from the beautiful desert country that has suffered through the authoritarian rule of one family over the past four decades.
