Eager to see the effects of the economic boom, we cabbed it over to the West Bay to explore modern Doha. Walking along a well-groomed waterfront park we found Qataris, as well as South Asian immigrants who have come to work in construction to house work, enjoying their notably sober Friday evening in the park (Qatar is governed by Sunni Muslim law which has in recent years undergone a period of liberalization but still largely frowns upon public drinking).
