Back at Thushan's uncle's house, his cousin, Kamani, gives Thushan a lesson in Sinhalese, one of the three official languages of the country (the others being Tamil and English). Since his family moved to America when he was nine months old, Thushan can only understand his native language, but cannot speak or read it.
