Outside the station, we met up with Thushan's uncle Hitchi. During the tsunami in 2004, the water level rose to almost the top of the light pole seen in this picture in just a matter of minutes. One of the frequently shown pieces of video footage that made international TV from the disaster was shot on the roof of a building nearby.
