06/06/2008 | Location: Galle, Sri Lanka
The Portuguese controlled Galle until about 1640 when the Dutch ousted them. Because of Galle's prime location in Sri Lanka, right at the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent and the island, the port was perfect to use as a hub for Asian shipping routes. The Dutch East India Company had as many as 150 ships coming in and out of the region around then.
