The consumption of beef is largely taboo in India. Dairy products, however, such as buffalo milk and curd (yogurt) are believed by some to cleanse both the body and spirit. Here a lone cow rests roadside. Even in large Indian cities like Mumbai, it is not uncommon to find free-ranging, unattended cows roaming the city streets.
