Masala chai is the drink of choice in Ahmedabad and its popularity extends across the Indian sub-continent and beyond. Roadside vendors usually brew the tea in a large pot using black tea leaves, cinnamon, cardamon, ginger and a host of other spices. Sugar and milk are then added and the tea is served in an espresso-sized plastic cup. On any given night, the city's numerous chai stands are a buzz with lively chatter accented by the smell of sweet masala chai.
