Ahmedabad, the capital of the Northwest Indian state of Gujarat, is home to some 6 million inhabitants. Perhaps the most notable of Gujarati residents past and present is Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Indian independence movement, who led the now-famous Salt Satyagraha, a march from Ahmedabad 240 miles west to Dandi on the coast of Gujarat to protest unfair British-imposed salt taxes. Gandhi's widely embraced philosophy of non-violent civil disobedience was instrumental in helping India earn its independence. Here, a statue of Gandhi wearing his trademark dhoti is seen on a busy Ahmedabad street.
