In 2002, only one year after a devastating earthquake rocked the city, religious tensions bubbled to the surface in Ahmedabad as Hindus and Muslims rioted, resulting in more than 1,000 deaths during a month-long stretch of violence. Thousands of Muslims were forced to flee their homes in mixed neighborhoods for safer refugee camps.
