07/10/2008 | Location: Lampang, Thailand
On a trip through Lampang, we decided to visit the Thai Elephant Conservation Center. The center was renamed in 2002 as the National Elephant Institute(although no signs alluded to this). The objective remains the same, however – the conservation of Thai elephants. Not only is the center the training and preparatory ground for elephant caretakers (mahouts), but it is a great place for tourists to learn about elephants, as well.
