Rising directly out of thick tropical jungle in the Mexican state of Chiapas, it's not hard to see why the Mayans commanded so much power; the ancient ruins of Panlenque are beyond inspiring. The collection of pyramids and buildings (over 500 in total), sprouts out of the jungle, reaching as high as eight stories - and all of this was done without the help of the wheel or pack animals between 100 BC and 700 AD.
